Are Lund boat more likely to suffer transom rot? Seems you do a lot of them. In general wouldn't a composite material such as plastics do a better job of being the filler material. The plastic used in toilet partitions is near bullet proof. It is heavier than wood though. But water, wind, heat and sunlight has near zero effect on the stuff. I have several pieces that stay out side for cleaning boards that are near 15 years old and have not even faded. But I will bet the cost over plywood would be 3 times as high. Still you would not ever have a transom rot out. Or better yet trade up to a boat without a transom like a Hewes. Problem there is they won't be "done dirt cheap".

biggest problem with cored transoms they must be strong and flexible there is really no better material for this than good old plywood

depending how much of the rest of the boat has to be disassembled to dig out all the thru bolts and splash wells a rebuild transom final bill can be any where from 1500 to 4500 fiberglass boats 2500 5000 some higher on twin stern drive models that often need stringer work
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU SAY "COMPOSITE " technically particle board is a composite so is Styrofoam = not all composite materials will work well in a transom some are too stiff and will cause cracking of the aluminum

GREEN WOOD IS TREATED WITH COPPER OXIDE AND CORRODES ALUMINUM HORRIBLY
ON AVERAGE A HEWES CRAFT AND OR A THUNDER JET IS SOME WHERE BETWEEN 20-30% LESS MONEY THAN A LUND FOR EXAMPLE AND WILL NEVER NEED A TRANSOM REPLACED BECAUSE OF ROTTED WOOD

Why do we only do this repair in the winter ?
with the hours of labor that goes into these repairs. In these cases we end up charging 70-77 dollars a hour for these jobs when our shop labor rate is 115 per hr
if I can find some one that wants to work on just transoms I will consider adding it for the rest of the season but for now it is case by case depending on work load
we don't want to farm it out and loose control of the quality process we have developed over a long period of time and yes mistakes made in the past .

PS YES WE DO FIBERGLASS TRANSOMS AS WELL IO AND INBOARD STRINGERS AND TRANSOMS THE BIG QUESTION IS ALWAYS IS IT REALY WORTH IT

Unfortunately Frank, I believe I've got another Lund for you to replace a transom on. Is this something that I can reserve a "spot" for in advance of the upcoming off season?

yes you can
you will be # 3 on the list stop by and nail down your spot we usual do two at a time and start when kids go back to school
some times we get slow around the 4th of July if it is so bad you can not use it any more we work on it between jobs
