If you want to stay "local" to Highland you should get familiar with Pastrick, Hammond and Portage Marinas. Pastrick, as you know is a great option for the "spring" coho. Hammond can get you to the same areas and also accesses Calumet Harbor which is a terrific option on days with North and Northeast winds. Plenty of fish.
As April transitions into May, head on out from East Chicago onto the shoals for lakers and salmon both. Which is more abundant varies from year to year.
Again, depending on the year and where the summer fish set up, you will want to transition to Portage - some years by late May, other years by late June. Often, plenty of fish in Indiana waters can be found until early July. Most Portage "regulars" buy both IL and MI licenses and don't much worry about where the fish are found. Other than IL's two laker limit, all the other regs are virtually identical.
Most seasons you won't "have" to head north at least into July.
