What boat insurance do you guys recommend? I have progressive but haven’t heard good things about them if you have to file a claim. Tow boat used Geico. Not sure about them either. Anyone have good experiences with a company?

I've had progressive for a long time on my boats and autos. Never had a claim with the boat but have dealt with them with auto claims and they've been good.

BoatUS has treated me well. Always pay extra for agreed upon value vs actual value when you are insuring fishing boats.

BoatUS, Geico, Progressive, Chub, Charter Lakes and Ace. These companies specialize in marine policies.
Stay away from your auto insurance companies.

Many of the Charter Boats around the country rely on Charter Lakes (now called Gallagher Charter Lakes) www.charterlakes.com. They started out strictly as a charter boat insurer, but they now insure private boaters, as well. I've never heard a horror story from any boat owner, anywhere, about a Charter Lakes claim. I've had a few - mostly it has been, get it fixed ASAP and send us the invoice. Boom - done. Check 'em out.

Before the "hurricane" seasons - Harvey, Irma, Michael and a couple in the Carolinas in the past few years, there were lots of insurance companies getting into boat insurance and they lost their shirts. Instead of "haul it out when you evacuate" as Charter Lakes allowed. They stalled and whined. Never stall when a hurricane threatens. Those still in business have either stopped insuring boats or jacked premiums drastically. Many are still in litigation about Harvey damage and the boaters still haven't got a check.

I have Boat US (everything else in life is State Farm). I have learned not to use fly by night insurance companies. I had not heard of Charter Lakes - I will have to check them out.

Originally I insured my boat with GEICO, but received support from Ski Safe. Turned out that at the time, say 10 years ago, GEICO had been outsourcing boat insurance through Ski Safe all along. So the following year I contacted Ski Safe directly, got better rates and great service!

Never looked back...
