Ive never SM fished on the south end, bu id like to give it a few tries this spring. When does the SM fishing getting going good? What baits do guys like to use? Thanks for any tips.

water temp mid 50's to 60. Hit the rock walls and any crayfish/perch/goby colored deep diving cranks, double bladed bass spoons, drop shot technique with worms, 1/2 oz jig heads with paddle bodies ( I like white head with chartreuse body)... Thats always been my strategy and I've always done well.

What Jums said. Only thing I will add is start with the fast baits and move to the drop shot if they arent producing. Gary to Chicago will be your best fishing, although you can find some around portage too.
