Went in the woods Saturday and was soaked by 9 so I decided Sunday would be a good day to restart opening day. Armed with my 20ga H&R slug gun I headed into the woods with kind of a late start as everything was getting light but I wasn't discouraged.
Sat in the stand an hour watching a squirrel run around. After a while he ran under my stand which I was hoping he wouldn't climb my tree and give me away with the barking. I scooted a bit to look under me and boom there was a spike buck sniffing my ladder. Watched him wonder back and forth a bit then down the hill and off he went.
About 15 minutes later a very mature 6 point came strolling along between the corn and the woods in search mode for something. I thought "oh yeah I'm gonna get this guy" pointed in a hole in branches and waited a sec for him to get to it. Soon as he was in the scope I shot, should have whistled first but I'm still new at this, he didn't fall but took off into the woods which shocked me. I thought, I know I had to have hit him at 25 yards. After 20 min of waiting I came down and started tracking. He only made in maybe 15 yards into the woods, turned and collapsed on the side of a hill.
Dragged him out into the open, dressed him out, and began dragging him the 200+ yards back to my truck. Boy did my quads get a workout!

Even the 6pointers are bigger up north, you guys got it all up there. I wish some of those genes would work their way to the southern end of the state.

Congrats Kingme and thanks for sharing your story and pics. My hats off to you as I also hunted in that rain on the opener. Rough in those conditions.
