we have tried different items. For us anymore we have gone to canola seed planted late summer. Come first frost the canola goes thru a chemical change and gets really sweet. It will turn a light purple on the leaf edges when it is sweet. You can take a bite and taste the sugar content..

It really depends on your area & how much time you want to put in. We have tried a lot of different types of seeds. Clover seemed to start out good but once the deer found it they tore it up to the point there was none left. Tried a number of throw & grow products. Again limited success. I have some buddies that do it pretty good. But they are bringing in tractors & real farm equipment. Their plots work great. They like any tubes. As they also get sweet with the cold. But they have it mixed with other seeds to keep the plots active before the cold. There is lots of info out there. Before you do anything weigh in your cost plus time spent taking care of what you plant. I hope this helps.

Thanks for great info guys I’m not too worried about keeping the deer around the food plot as going based off cameras they are there all the time, except when I’m there lol!!! We have 25 acres of hunting ground that of which me n a cousin r thinking about planting 4-5 acres mainly to concentrate the deer to the food plots late season from December til end of season.. I’ve done soil samples n only need to fertilize n till the ground so now I’m shopping for ideas to get most outa our money...

My son took liberties and tilled and seeded this plot yesterday on the farm we hunt. Common rain!

This plot went in to clover around the outside and a new product we are trying down the center. Last time we purchased canola I believe was Jakes south of valpo on 49, Canola has a short growing season so we have a couple of small plots we do right around the 4th of July. That way it stays small and as mentioned earlier, canola gets hit late when it turns purplish in the leaf edges after first frost. So when the ag fields are all gone and the deer have cleaned up the beans and corn that might have dropped, anything like canola that turns sweet in the cold really starts to get hit. Prices are going up on seed as canola oil has been going up in price. More of a cold season product. More and more of the deer food plot mixes are using a percentage of canola sometimes called rape seed.

It is coming along pretty good. Deer are already working on the clover and radish plants
