Yesterday we went on the hunt. Looking for spring turkeys and tasty morel mushrooms. My son Jim called this nice tom in at around 15yds. All I saw was hens. Then we spent the afternoon picking morels. Found a nice bunch and had steak with spring mushrooms last night. ;)

Good morning Jeff,

Southeast portion of Starke county. We checked about 5 days ago on the mushrooms and there was none. The recent rains got them going.

Saw plenty of turkeys but most of the gobblers were henned up already. We have been hunting the same farm for around 35+ years now.

Must have been a good day to smoke turkeys. The 'shrooms are mostly gone down here although I still hear a few being found here and there. Gobblers down here are henned up at daylight are tough to call in right now in the mornings. I have more luck hunting in the afternoon, when the toms are by themselves or when they are feeding and strutting with hens. Call the hens in toward you and they will drag the tom right to you. That time of day the hens are concerned with feeding and not breeding and will decoy fairly easily. While not as exciting as a run and gun hunt it works very well if you can be patient, call softly, know where a few areas that turkeys feed in.

This tom is a 2 year old and was with 4 hens. The hens did their job and I did mine.

Took this 20lber. yesterday afternoon. Slept in and went down later in the day, hoping to find a goobler with out a hen. Let out a few clucks and this boy answered. Took him about an hour to work his way in. ;)

The afternoon hunt is the perfect game. Get to sleep in, not many other hunters, and the toms are cruising for dates. It ought to be illegal. Good job Ed.
