I'm new and just getting ready to put some line on a few new reels. What do you guys suggest for these spring coho? Thanks in advance! Not using down riggers.

Personally, I dont think it matters whatsoever. The water is generally not clear near shore especially this time of year. I use braid if I am casting (832 or Powerpro) in either 15 or 20lb test. If I am trolling, depending on the rod its typically 20lb big game or 50lb braid with 20lb Fluoro leader since I am usually trolling with my offshore rods.

If I am ever concerned about the water being too clear while casting, I will use an 8-10lb Fluoro leader.

Interesting. Do you locate fish by trolling then stop and cast or how do you decide when to cast and when to troll?

I prefer casting over trolling when fish are near shore - its just a whole lot more fun catching salmon, steelhead, and lake trout on a bass rod. If I decide I am going to cast, then I am targeting some sort of structure element, whether that be the reef just of the port of Indiana, or the lighthouse at gary (warm water discharge) etc etc.

Sometimes I just want to take it easy and troll too. Trolling will generally put fish in the boat at a faster pace unless you really find a HOT HOT zone casting. This is because you are covering a much larger area and have better odds at crossing active fish.

If I am trolling and see a large concentration of fish in an area, I will not stop and cast. Its a real pain taking down and setting up the trolling spread. I will just tend to run back and forth trolling over that area.
