Great Lakes Salmon Initiative
7 hrs ·
With this brutally cold weather is everyone thinking about warm weather and screaming drags? The improvements in our salmon fishery management direction by the states DNR's, the future looks bright in support of Chinook, Coho and Steelhead and cuts to Lake Trout----EXCEPT

Is everyone ready for the Lake Trout 2.0 Armegedon. The fleecing of America? Are you going to buy the Snake Oil? Allow misuse of your federal tax dollars to destroy your salmon fishery and destroy the work the MDNR and WDNR has done to insure the continuation of our World Class Fishery and the economic impact on Lake Michigan ports????

In this case it is LAKE HERRING commonly referred to as Cisco. The GLFC, USFWS, GLRI among other federal agencies and philanthropic groups like the Nature Conservancy are trying to slam Cisco/Lake Herring down our throats along with the states DNR's and tribal entities. Understand completely that these federal agencies and groups are for native species ONLY! NOT Chinook, Coho, Steelhead and Brown Trout---They support the eradication of alewives, smelt and gobies the baitfish that supports our sport fish and fisheries. They want to return the Great Lakes to environmental conditions at the time of European settlement. This is impossible and they know it!!! This is about money and jurisdictional control over the States management of our fisheries. There is no scientifically feasible way to return the Great Lakes to a native state with all of the invasive species and federal agencies know this!!

We want to make sure everyone understands what is really going on--in Lake Michigan Cisco are rebounding on their own, doubling their population every year since 2010. The catch is biologists don't know why and the MDNR does not want the feds to stock cisco until it is scientifically understood what is occurring. The USFWS cannot plant these or any fish without states approval. The states and tribes would support Whitefish restoration though but the feds are pushing Lake Herring. WHY?

Cisco/Lake herring will complete the job that Lake Trout were supposed to do and we bought into it--THE ERADICATION OF ALEWIVES AND SMELT! Do you want proof--Look at Lake Huron a precipitous act to create a predator pit. The GLSI and WLBA stepped up just in time to prevent the collapse on Lake Michigan! Cisco are achieving growth rates and size never seen historically--Why? They live in the same niche and feed in the same niche as alewives and smelt competing with them for food then when large enough feed on Gobies, alewives and smelt. The feds are trying to get you to buy the Snake Oil, trying to convince you this is a great baitfish for trout and salmon but this is a predator that competes with and eats baitfish.

There is a media campaign/war going on to try to sell you that there is huge support for cisco led by USFWS and the GLFC. There are even accusations of buying anglers off to show up at meetings and presentations and media shows to show support of cisco. The GLSI is not making these accusations nor has proof but we can't ignore the accusations nor not make you aware of these or the possible depths these people are willing to go to bullshit us.
