Great Lakes Salmon Initiative

In light of the recent announcement by Wisconsin and their changes to stocking levels outside of the LMC, Lake Michigan Committee recommendations, the GLSI emailed a survey to it's members we have email address for. Some of our members never gave addresses or were hard to read if hand written. It is extremely important that the Board of Directors represent the interests and wishes of the members. It is also important for proper representation that you renew your membership through fees, it takes a considerable amount of money to operate, travel expenses to meetings, maintain website, fees and registration with agencies etc. If you are a member and didn't get a survey please resend your email address so we can get it in the system

We will present the questions and results of the survey soon and also the written comments. The survey has been successful in response and is a simple effective way to hear privately the members wants outside of the facebook public forum.

The GLSI formed to fight for the importance of maintaining our silver fish, fishery. Recognizing the interests of the majority of the public to maintain our Chinook fishery and the economical and social impact as the driver of the fishery. In no way did we ever say that Lake Trout didn't deserve a spot, just that the native only agenda and the unbalanced stocking of trout was counter productive to the goal of alewife resurgence. The lake trout plan is not a balance of science but more politically driven!

The following pictures show some of the information people are looking for in stocking numbers and locations. One large change is Wisconsin reducing trout stocking by -255,000, from 300K to 45K shown in the picture....not sure if this will happen in 2020 or later. Trout are ordered by states to the USFWS 2yrs before stocking. If Wisconsin doesn't accept the -255K trout in 2020 where are these fish, where are they going to be stocked? Michigan waters like in 2017 when Wisconsin refused 400K trout?

My guess is that MI will likely take any trout they can get. Lakers support the majority of the catch after the kings move north in Michigan. Michigan appears happy to just have a trophy king fishery and will likely not change as long as people catch large kings even if it’s the only king they catch. Wisconsin is looking for king numbers. Who knows how it will all shake out as it’s tough to balance science and what anglers want. Thanks for the info LS.

I also think it was a pretty selfish and nearsighted move by Wi Dnr. Especially after they went behind everyones backs and changed the number they agreed on. This could turn out bad for everyone if it is to much to soon of an increase.

Tim same words were said after Wisconsin did their thing 3 years ago,,, remember? So how did we get more 30+ kings last season then in the history of the entire stocking years? I personally was not in agreement this time around with Wisconsin but I was 3 years ago.I also remember who said those words they are here in the history.
