Heading Into this ice fishing season and need a new auger.

Anyone have suggestions on what type? I'm leaning to the electric type ion or striker? Any good ot bad reviews?

Thanks for the help in advance!

The new trend seems to be a drill w/ good torque 750 in # or more and an auger made by K-Drill or Pistol (Eskimo) or Nero.
Milwaukee and Rigid make 1000 in # an up to 1400.
I still have a 3hp auger that weighs 40 lb but picked up a Mil fuel last year. No auger yet but am leaning toward K-drill as it has chipper blades that will last longer. That 40 lb will be a back up
You can read tons of info here.

I made an adapter to fit my hand auger into my Dewalt a few years back. Had four batteries, worked ok. But you got to keep the batteries warm or they don't last too long.
I'm looking for a propane one but am too cheep to buy myself one.

Hand auger works for me. Battery powered are great when new but they deteriorate as they age. Drill adaptors work great just keep spare batteries and keep them warm. I’ll just keep drilling manually. Good workout!

Baron I agree I have an 41/2” nills and a 6” nills n I love em I’ve probably drilled couple hundred holes with the smaller and few less with the bigger one only cuz I went way too shallow drilling a new lake n hit bottom!!!!! Otherwise I have no problem using 41/2” auger n pulling 13” crappies through it! N believe me when I say a few hundred holes without breaking a sweat

I use a 7” Strike Master. With 10” of ice or less it’s just a good workout and no big deal. Normally around here we are fishing on 4” so that is easy. A few years ago we had 24” on Pine Lake. Trucks driving all over the lake and it was a bit of a challenge to hand drill. Lol.

I have had mora drills (You have to keep the blades sharp) , a lazer drills (Turns much easier than a mora, but blades are expensive), a Honda StrikeMaster 8 inch (which was a stud at knocking out holes) and an ION. My current auger is the ION, with a 7 3/4 inch K-drill. The ION powerhead turns a little slower than the K drill recommends, but it knocks out holes with ease. I got the ION really cheap, with a 6 inch auger on it, and wanted a little larger hole, so went with the K-Drill when it went on sale in the spring. A Milwaukee fuel with the K drill is the recommended set up from K-Drill, and together they make a good combo. the Fuel drill will turn at the RPM's recommended by K-Drill, and together they do not weigh a lot.( bring an extra battery and keep it warm) . The Honda weighted about 22lbs, and started with ease, It was quiet and had plenty of torque, and was easy on fuel, but it was still powered by gasoline, which has the potential to stink. The ION charges in a few hours and has no smell. It also has reverse, to clean out holes. The K drill took off about 5 lbs total weight bringing it to around 15 LBS. They all beat using a spud... Good Luck.
