Haven’t posted in a while. Happy New Year guys. I’ve been fishing couple times a week all “winter”. Drained the lower unit on the boat back in November, so it’s been all shore stuff. Overall its been a steady season for me, mostly steelhead on the creeks, but lakers and the occasional whitefish are around MC and the perch are in and out of the slips and river. Today I decided I would try to scratch out a brown, haven’t caught or seen any since the spring. I headed to Slez’s and picked up a mixed dozen of large fatheads and medium/large roaches. I chose to hit Portage Lakefront. I fished from about 1-4pm and found my browns. First fish hit skein on the bottom and burped up a 3 inch shad in the net. I had a bobber drifting around with a roach and saw it go down resetting the skein rod. Fish dropped the bait. I took aa cue from the shad in the net and started casting a chrome 1/3oz cleo and was rewarded with 2 more chunky brownies fishing the spoon on a slow lift drop retrieve right on the bottom. Had one other bobber down, but again the fish dropped the bait. I was intending on fishing into the dark hoping to tag an elusive lakefront walleye, but dropping temps and all the ice on the rocks made me thing otherwise. Talked to a couple guys casting from a boat tand they said they had a couple coho and saw another guy land a big laker from shore. Supposed to get cold and snow the next few days, so glad I got me fix. Won’t be long til we’re into spring fishing again.
