After starting the day with a shifter cable frozen in neutral that cost me an hour of valuable fishing time, my friend and I picked up a pair of decent coho heading WNW out of Portage in 47 and 52 fow. One came on a Gold Fluorescent Red J-11 at 40 feet back and the other on a Red/Black Squiggles Thinfish 55 feet back.

With the quick start, I was optimistic for the rest of the trip. But the bite shut off. That, and I broke my own rule of leaving fish to find fish. Instead of going back through another time or two, we decided to run over to Gary around 11am, since the reports have been favorable. There were six boats over there working the wall, so we joined in. I saw a couple of fish get pulled in, but we never got another strike.

Going 2-for-2 is definitely better than 0-for-X, so I’ll take it for the first trip of the season.

I headed out to the ship canal from Hammond about 1:30 and went 0-for-x; more accurately 0 for 2 and one was a big fish that stole my thin fish.
