Was able to get out Sunday and Monday with my daughter. So glad we did. Not sure when the next time will be. On Sunday we went out of East Chicago. Went to the ship canal and got a quick limit.
On Monday we went out of Portage. Ran over to Gary. It was slow for us. We did finally manage to get our limit. Getting away from others and a little deeper water allowed us to pick away at them. Ran all thinfish on flatlines. Did take one fish on a dipsey with flasher fly 15 foot out.
Wonder if you would take a look at this fish. Pretty sure it’s a coho but it was larger than the others and had a dark color. Meat said coho. What do you think?

appears to be a young chinook, only going off general appearance and spots on lower part of the tail

I think its a coho due to gums, overall appearance, and my best shot at counting anal fin rays, but the tail is certainly "chinooky"

Agree with Jeff, looks like a fish that never spawned maybe?

Thanks for report! When you say shipping canal is that the canal between ArcelorMittal east and west (inland steel & LTV) ? I’m taking my kids out tomorrow out of EC. We hit the hole in the wall last week and only caught 4. Thanks again!

Where the line is is where I was talking about. Hope that helps. Keep an eye out for big boats coming in.

Coho for sure. Anal fin is a dead giveaway. And the gums. Couple spots on the lower tail lobe but that's not uncommon in larger coho. Chinook would have way more.

Still a weird looking coloration though, and seems skinny given the size of the head. Might be a stressed fish or one that is out of whack with the spawning seasons. I saw someone up in northern Michigan caught a mature buck coho the other day in one of the rivers, all colored up for the spawn.
