I'd often thought about using a gaff but have never researched it. I've never seen or heard of anyone using a gaff in the great lakes. My question would be, is it legal?

I have a 17-1/2 foot crestliner and my king net is way too big for the boat I think a gaff would be great for the smaller boats !!

I've gaffed numerous saltwater fish and one thing I've learned - the bigger the fish, the easier it is to do. Also, the feistier the fish, the harder it is to do. Gaffing any salmon much under 10 or 12 pounds would add a whole new dimension to the sport, which if whole new dimensions are what you are after, have at it.

Several times I've had fish that got hooked up in the net, half in - half out and I always thought, "if only I had a gaff...."  The problem would be having it close at hand for those rate instances it's needed.  I don't have a convenient storage spot on my boat that would also be instantly handy.

We have a couple of nets on board and use them for most fish.  Our large net isn’t huge so larger fish that are still green may get the gaff.  We always have it ready to go.  Since this one was in the dark we decided to use the gaff.  It has saved us from losing a few Kings over the past couple of years.  Yes it is legal to gaff land a legally hooked fish assuming it’s of keeper size.  Not legal to use in the creeks.  Lol

Trent,

This is the post that says get out there and go fishing!!  Like Ed said on the other post starting in mid August they start showing up.  From there it’s a matter of getting out and there isn’t a big window.  Man I hope you can get out in that sweet boat of yours!’
