We hit the big lake out of SJ again this morning for 3 hours. We ended up going 2 for 3. The first fish was a coho that hit a red with black squiggles Brad’s Thin Fish within 30 seconds of putting the first rod out. A big king hit a Moonshine magnum RV bloody nose on a 7 color leadcore. We lost a coho on a dipsy with flasher fly.

What’s your program or spread for spring kings? I catch plenty of coho but am usually lucky if a catch a king whereas other boats trolling around me are catching 2 or 3 or 5 kings. We ran two mono high lines on boards for Brad’s Thin Fish for coho and then we had a 5 color, 7 color, downrigger, and dipsy with orange stubby and green fly. All rods except the dipsy have 50 ft mono leaders in 20#. We ran spoons on the leadcore and downrigger. I only ever get hits in Moonshine bloody nose in magnum. Dreamweaver super slims and Michigan stingers never work for me. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Looking for tips/recommendations on how to target kings better.

Seems like spoons on DR and LC catch most of the spring kings we get. Sounds like you are doing that. I personally start with a mix of sizes and colors and see if they will clue me into a a presentation they may want that day. You can pin slider spoons on your DR lines too to get a few more options out there.

We did well today on coho and got one king, so I’m certainly not complaining. But I got the same result I usually do. Guys I talked to at the ramp all had like 3 or 4 kings and a couple of coho whereas I had one king and a ton of coho. Not sure when we ran lines targeting kings, unless I’m doing something wrong. We ran a 5 color LC, 7 color LC, 100 copper, 150 copper, and downrigger with magnum Moonshine spoons and magnum Mr. Chrome spoons in bloody nose, green, and blue with glow and RV. I tried a Dreamweaver super slim too but no luck. The one king we got on a dodger fly setup for coho.

What kind of spoons would you run on you lines for kings? Or are you putting crankbaits in those lines?

Sounds like you are doing some good things. Try magnum spoons and J-plugs
