I took my daughter and my uncle out on the Boston Whaler yesterday afternoon. We ran out to about 60 FOW and started to set lines. The sky was clear and there was a gentle chop in the water. Boats were scattered so we just pointed the Whaler WNW into the chop.

We ran two leadcore lines on one side of the boat and two copper lines on the other side off big boards. We had a wire dipsy with flasher/fly, downrigger line, and stern planer flatline 350 ft back down the chute.

Action was slow at first with the first fish, which was a steelhead, coming around 4 pm on the stern planer flatline with Maglip Grinch down the chute in 80 FOW. A few minutes later we lost a king on 300 copper with Mr. Chrome Pirates Parrot. A few minutes after that we landed a lake trout of the dipsy with Salmon Candy Kryptotron flasher with No Mercy UV fly out 150 feet.

Things got crazy around 5:30 pm. We suddenly had a triple—all kings—on in 100 FOW and landed all 3 of them, which was a miracle in and of itself. The craziest part was that two of them were on the same downrigger line—one on the Beaver Bloody Nose on the mainline and one on an orange/yellow Dreamweaver Super Slim spoon off the slider. The third one came of a 10 color leadcore with Dreamweaver standard NBK.

A few minutes later the 300 copper with Mr. Chrome Pirates Parrot goes off and we land a 12 lb king. Then the downrigger with Beaver Bloody Nose fires off again and we land another king. I throw a Beaver Bloody Nose on a 7 color leadcore and it goes off within minutes. We land that king and then get the 7 color back out. Then the downrigger and the 7 color go off at the same time. Double header! We barely land those—kings again—when the stern planer flatline with Mahlon Grinch set 350 back feet goes off and we see a coho dancing on the horizon. We land the coho when the wire dipsy with Salmon Candy Megatron flasher with Mercy UV fly starts zinging. I can barely get the rod out of the rod holder because a bruiser king is ripping line. We lost him at the net but not after getting a good look at him. He was a solid fish.

The action went on like that until we called it quits because we couldn’t fit anymore fish in XL fish kill bag. The three of us ended up with 11 kings, 1 coho, 1 steelhead, and 1 laker. We lost another 5 or 6 fish.

Fishing is great right now.
