I stumbled across these last year shopping for weights and the physics teacher in me was too curious to pass them up. I ran the black one a few times and liked it enough to order a yellow one to see if the color makes a difference this year.

I put a pair of downriggers on my little Alumacraft more for fun than anything and like not having a lead ball rolling and bouncing in the boat.

If anyone wants to give one a try, we can meet up at Portage or in Chesterton and I'll trade you out a weight.

I was on one boat long ago that used them. You are correct in saying their benefit occurs when they are in the boat. In the water, they are, like a solid weight, something to pull the downrigger wire tight.
