Anyone using weighted steel line on the south end? Watched an interesting YouTube on it. Looks interesting and possibly more forgiving than copper. Any input?

Please do. I've seen just a little about it, never tried it or heard from anyone using it. I know, years ago there were a few people trolling with 20 pound seven strand steel wire which would allow getting diving crankbaits deeper, or hanging a weight a couple ounces or so, then a leader at the end and then letting it out as an alternative to leadcore. Then braided line was invented and that was the end of that experiment.

Does the stuff being offered now require a using roller guide rods? Is it supposed to have a similar depth curve as copper? What's the YouTube vid URL?

So I’ve talked to Russell from Anglers Avenue in Wisconsin. Apparently it is really popular up there. It is supposed to have an identical dive rate with copper. However, he said it reacts more like lead core in the water. If I understood him right, it kinda whips up and down with changes more so than copper. He said it won’t kink. I’ve ordered a 2 and 3 hundred spool from him. One disadvantage was that you do need a terminal kit to attach to the backing and leader.
According to him, many up north are ditching copper and lead core up north and replacing with this. Will run on any rod used for copper so don’t need a roller rod.
I’ll try to get a YouTube link.

So I’ve been using 100, 200, and 300 weighted steel setups this year. I’ve been running them on one side and copper on the other. Same sink rate. No kinking or issues deploying. So far I love it. It seems to catch fish at an equal rate as copper but so much easier to fish!!!
I highly recommend giving it a go. I think you’ll thank me.

Weighted steel is very user friendly. and doesn't kink or backlash as easily as copper.  I always viewed copper as a necessary evil once we started fishing below 50 ft.. . Coppers catch fish but take the sport out of fishing.   We have started making the running change from coppers to steel.

Can you run this line on rods with regular line guides or do you need roller guide rods.

Also, and this is probably highly subjective, I've got a couple of wire diver rods with 19 strand wire (instead of the 7 strand which has been around forever) from the same company. My diver wire is labelled 45 pound just as the weighted steel is.  Is this the the same stuff with different labels. I'm not dissing it if it is, but just curious if I already have some of it which I could try.  I really like the 19 strand diver wire.  Seems a lot more user friendly, but doesn't seem to get the divers quite as deep, but only about 10% difference - so let out 220 feet instead of 200.

Hi Brother Nature. Been a while. It’s a different wire then what you run for dipseys. No roller rods needed. I use the same rods that I use for copper.
The line is made (or sold) by torpedo. You can find in on Amazon or The Reel Shot in Shaboygan (don’t know how to spell lol) sells it. It’s kinda hard to explain it. It would be perfect for charters to run because is so easy to use.

not sure if that will work or not. I won’t be up this weekend but will be out of Portage next weekend. If you’re in the area, yell at me. You can check out or even use one of mine if you want to try it out. The only thing I don’t love is the termination. They sell a termination kit and I recommend using it.
