I have a pair of trolling flies that came from my dads stash of stuff he used back in the 80s. Anyone know anything about them? Pretty unique compared to today's flies. Horsehair and mylar tinsel with a prop in the front, I assume for the dirtier water we used to have back then. I have thoughts of putting fresh leader line on them and giving them a shot when the water is less than ideal clarity.

There's always a chance they will work great. With what seems like a switch to narrower/thinner spoons/bait they might just be the thing. Although most of the time I've found that the older styles have gone to the bottom of the box for a reason. I remember running those but it was behind a set of "cow bells" Took my first King on a blue/sliver fly very much like the ones in the picture. Be sure to let us know how they work for you.

I've seen flies with little spinners, propellers, even tiny Spin n glows ahead. Others with litlle flippers on the hook, even bright colored hooks. Probably other accoutrements designed to make them irresistible to the fish. I've used them and never had any of the knock my socks off or proved to be extra effective for catching fish.

By all means give the little twirly flies a go. You'll catch fish on them and using them will make the experience a little extra special.

I wouldn't relegate these to use in dirty water, however. In my experience dark flies -blacks, deep blues, dark green, purple and combos of these mixed with gold highlights are the best for off-colored water.

Have fun!
