I wonder if Cabelas will continue to sell their line up of boats or will BP force the sale of their Tracker line? Or I guess another option would be to close the Cabelas marinas and the power sports line. That would not concern me as much as general merchandise being under the control of one team of buyers. The first red 6 inch dodger I own was bought at the Portage BP. I paid nearly 13 bucks for it. The second one I have was purchased at the Hammond Cabelas for nearly 8 bucks. It was the same Luhr Jensen dodger for nearly half the money. I hope you are right Dirty but large retail establishment like these are not likely going to change their pricing schemes. These places only have two benefits as far as I am concerned. They are sometimes convenient if they carry what you are looking for. Lastly they make a great showroom for you to figure out what you want.

We can agree to disagree ;)

Cabelas and Bass Pro's primary competition is etailers online, aside from each other. There is a reason why their sales results year over year are dropping. Its a new world and retail is no longer about the competition down the street, its national, and sometimes global. People will buy where its cheapest, if your not close to cheapest, you go out of business. If Bass Pro were to increase prices higher, they will lose customer base and ultimately fail.

Also, bass pro is a private company, there are no share holders. They are buying cabelas (a public company traded on the stock market) and essentially making them private under the bass pro umbrella.

Also, outlet stores like Columbia etc. sell flawed merchandise. That is why its so cheap. Some times its fit, tagged wrong, stitching, errant logo and so on. Sure most of its still good and we as buyers dont care and most dont even notice, but it cant be supplied to primary retail because retailers hold their suppliers to standards so it has to go somewhere - goes to the outlet store and places like overstock.com. Its either sell it cheap there, or trash bin.

Support the mom and pop shops that are left. You cannot get information on boats, motors, equipment, or what is the hot bait, at either BP or Cabelas, like you can from a mom and pop store like Calumet Marine. ;)

I have sent alot of folks to the columbia outlet store. Bought gloves, shirts, hats, jackets etc. and never, never had any issues. The only complaint from friends is that upon entering, it was hard to get out with out spending a couple of hundred. ;)

I just hope that since they are retaining the separate brands, Cabela's can maintain the quality of their clothing and hunting stuff... RedHead at BassPro can't hold a candle to the Cabela's stuff.
