I've cut a lot of cohos the last couple days and noticed one thing different than earlier this year. A few of the fish have black, icky stuff in their bellies which tells me they've been eating some sort of tiny insect life. More, many more had a digestive tract that featured that gray-green-iridescent pasty-poo that occurs when salmon and lake trout (ESPECIALLY LAKE TROUT) are on a baitfish diet. Didn't see any with identifiable minnowish creatures in their tummy but it sure looked like some of them were starting to feed on meat. Most were empty as normal this time of year, but enough had innard-stuff to be noticeable.

Don't remember ever seeing them this early in year - had black flies on boat in Michigan City on Sun (April 2). Not a lot, but a half-doz. at a time.
Fish had nothing in stomachs on Sun., but they're was black gunk in intestrinal tracks. Captain found a few insects in stomachs of fish caught on Sat.

whats thats mean?
What it t means to me
The body bait bit is going to slow down and the dodger and fly bite will greatly increase on days when the water is cleaner or on the mud lines
thanks for the observations and posting it guys
helps us all make better use of the limited time we get to spend on the water

Not much green/glo poo in the fish yesterday, but I did stir up some of the black icky stuff to see if anything identifiable was present. There were some little, black, hard-shelled beetle bugs about half the size of lady bugs in the black mix.

I did catch several cohos on Dodger flies yesterday. Blue-Green-Gold and about 1 1/2-inch long. I don't believe the fish thought they were eating bugs.
