BREAKING NEWS

The WDNR has released their 3yr stocking plan for Lake Michigan. The WLBA has worked vigorously with the WDNR on a plan that supports a diverse fishery, while maintaining a World Class Fishery that is a destination for many across the Midwest.
Eight Wisconsin ports will receive thousands more Chinook Salmon that will be reallocated from Marinette and Strawberry Creek. Meanwhile, Marinette will receive a substantial increase in Seeforellen Brown Trout, a species that thrives on shallow water structure and has a far better return to creel in the Green Bay waters. This is a big win for the many sportsman of Wisconsin's Western Shore!
Coho Salmon stocking numbers will remain similar to previous years, however they will be stocked at a much larger size than the traditional fingerling. This will ensure much better survival rates and enhance catch rates for the thousands of anglers that frequent Lake Michigan.
Steelhead stocking will increase by 50,000 fish. In addition to 70,000 of the heralded Skamania Strain of Rainbow Trout which will be reintroduced to Wisconsin waters with collaboration from the Indiana Dept of Natural Resources. This strain is sought after by all, as it is a high flyer and tends to stay more nearshore while providing anglers a summer run of fish into our tributaries.
Meanwhile Lake Trout limits will be mandated from a 2 fish limit to 5 fish, a testament to the recovery of this species. This all fantastic news for anglers across the Midwest looking to get in on WI's Great Lakes Fishery!!
The WLBA has also partnered with the WDNR on the aquaculture bill that recently passed. This will enable the state to partner with private hatcheries, easing the strain our state run facilities, while still providing anglers with excellent numbers of salmon/trout species.
Just when you thought the news couldn't get any better. The WDNR is expanding the use of net pens in many coastal communities. Maximizing the survivability of stocked fish is essential, all while working with local clubs and organizations creating a fantastic cooperative effort.
The partnership with the WLBA and WDNR continues to evolve and we take great pride in the fact that we have developed many strategies together, maintaining a diverse, thriving, economic fishery. We cannot thank our members enough for their support and hard work. With that being said, new membership is crucial to our effort and we invite everyone to join this organization. It is critically needed when moving forward on the many issues concerning the lake. The WDNR has shown that they are more than open and appreciate the voice of Lake Michigan anglers. We have shown that" together"we can work to improve this fishery for years to come. Many positive things are in the works for 2019, stay tuned and please join the "Voice" of Wisconsin's Lake Michigan Fishery.
