There was supposed to already be a new marina and boat ramp there they promised about 5 years ago. Didn't happen.
Maybe they can get something done this time

I'm not holding my breath on anything... gonna be a decade before they shut it down, plus then dealing with the coal ash pits and other contaminated ground, plus the infrastructure.

Going to be a long haul until anything comes out of it. But it's exciting for the long-term future of the lakefront, that's for sure! It will be really nice not to have giant open piles of coal and coal ash pits within a stone's throw of the lake

It was budgeted for $9 million dollars and bids came in at $13 million. Didn’t happen obviously.

Nisource does not own any nuclear plants, and certainly not in Ohio. Their only electrical territory is in northern Indiana. They own gas assets in various states including Ohio. I believe there are two nukes in Ohio and are owned by First Energy.

Nisource currently has three coal gen stations, Bailly, MI City, and Schaeffer (wheatfield). Bailly is all but done, sounds like the writing is on the wall for the other two. Being in this business, I can say it is a sad state of affairs for grid reliability due to the EPA. Not that I am against the EPA and making things cleaner, but we have plants closing all over due to the severe continued costs of making wholesale environmental improvements every few years because of ever changing regulations. It is large rotating machines that make the grid stable when a fault occurs and the grid reconfigures. Without those large turbines, the potential to see more blackouts, small and widescale, and much more likely. Nukes and NG also have large turbines. Wind and solar do not. They are a nice supplement, but that is all they are and all they ever will be........unless you want to be without power for days or weeks at a time.

Sorry for the rant haha! This business is my day job.

Also generally the wind and solar farms are owned by independent power producers funded by investors. Regulation dictates a certain amount of this power generation. There is a reason why the utilities do not generally own any of these assets. It costs more to produce the power than what is billed in return. Wall street money with government subsidies is the only reason they exist, unless you are willing to pay 40-50% more for your utility bill ;)

PS: As much as the shut down of plants hurts my business - I would love to see our lakefront with no industrial activity. How amazing would that be!

There is a strong silver lining for having power plants along the lake. Much of our earliest spring fishing is enhanced by having generators pumping warm water into the lake. I bet there were a million cohos caught over the years from the shore and in boats off the Dean Mitchell Plant in Gary before it closed. I've caught many limits by the Bailey Plant and the now-gone Com-Ed state line generator near Calumet Harbor. I'm sure the MC plant has an affect on spring fishing over there, I just don't fish that far very often.

I'm all for cleaner power (and the USA already produces the cleanest among the world's most populous countries) but not at the expense of government subsidies for unworkable alternatives and the subsequent affects on the economy.

Yes, our spring coho rate sure dropped swiftly after State Line shut down and access inside the Port was denied post Sept 11th

It was a lot higher out of HA/EC pre-2002, and those ports fell in line with BH and MC once access those two hot water discharges was not possible

I don't think NIPSCO has much effect though, they have a cooling tower and don't have too much of a hot water discharge to my knowledge. I think there's a small amount that might be discharged diffusely offshore, but there's no nearshore discharge to speak of
