If you subscribe to Great Lakes Angler magazine, by now you've probably thoroughly read the current issue. If you don't subscribe you can see most of the new items I tested last summer and included in the Tackle and Toys column, Basics and Beyond as well as a feature article I wrote about knives. Since there are billions of non-subscribers to GLA, and since GLA's website is a dead dinosaur, I started my own website in which I review many of the items I test and write up for the magazine. I've completed the update to this site so if you would like to see some of the latest or particularly unique items feel free to check out this site;

www.fishgear.reviews

The items in the menu starting with the Fish Fighter Downrigger Weight are all from the current GLA issue. Click on any of the items in the menu, a page with just the review of that particular item will pop up and down near the bottom is a button to click if you would like to share the blog on your own Facebook or Twitter feeds.

Mike,
I thought the downrigger weights were a great idea. Surprised someone around here never came up with that idea.
Enjoyed reading about the rest. Have kicked around about a better fillet knife. Great information.

The bent fin on the weight worked better than I thought it would. I don't know if it made a whole lot of difference in the catch, but it swayed out and stayed out so it did widen the spread a few feet.

I was decidedly anti-electric knife when I got the knife. Now, I feel like I need a spare in case the one I have eats the green weenie. Especially good on walleyes, steelhead, lake trout and gaspergoos.

Church tackle has come out with a filet knife with a blade turned 90 degrees to the grip and with a strategic bend so you don't have to lay the fish close to the edge of the cutting board when skinning a filet or drag your knuckles. I'm going to get one to test. I'm not particularly hopeful for it to be particularly life changing.
