Wondering what the advantages/disadvantages are to wire? I currently run braid but keep hearing about wire. Is it more for deeper water? Do I have to use a roller rod or can I use a copper lead rod? Backing vs no backing? Twirli tip?
Thanks in advance Marc

No stretch, thin and cuts water better so deeper. Also some say that the tone it makes going through the water attracts fish but I am on the fence on that one. Twilli tip with normal rod is fine. It is a little harder to maintain since it likes to curl and kink but not a huge deal. I got one used to try and ended up buying another and that is about the only thing I run my divers on now. They made a big difference for me but it could also be experience added to that.

One BIG advantage will show up here in a few weeks. Wire is immune (nearly) to fishhook fleas. Braid attracts them from miles around. I put some Torpedo Wire (19 strand) on one of my outfits this year and like it better than the seven strand. Much better. Don't know how flea repellant it is but I will be switching my other wire outfits to it should it be flea proof. I put about 100 yards of 40# braid on the reel then 600 feet of wire. Hope to never see the braided line again.

If you mean do I put tape or backing behind the braid on a braid dipsey, I do. Your reels will work best with full or nearly full spools. That being said I am using Tekota A 500 reels this year with braid and wire. These are rather small reels, but with an oversized drag and super hi retrieve ratio. Otherwise, I'd be using a 600 size Shimano or some other reel with about 330 yard of 30 pound mono capacity to get a big enough spool to not have to crank forever to reel in the fish. Here's a review i wrote of the TekotaA bncharters.wordpress.com/2019/04/05/shimano-tekota-a-reels/
