Guys, have any of you seen a lower unit start flaking like this. It is a used boat that I’m thinking about going to look at. Can’t tell if that’s paint or some kind of oxidation?

Thank you

Seems bizarre. To me it looks like the paint, but hard to tell from pictures. Is it peeling in some areas like it seems? Perhaps it was repainted at some point and you are seeing those effects now? not sure.

Yeah it looks like paint in the picture. That’s maybe peeling. The boat is 3 1/2 hours away. So I didn’t want to drive all the way there if it was a no go for sure. I asked the owner about it. And he said he bought the boat three years ago and it always look like that. So……

I’m no mechanic but I would guess a bad paint job on a remanufactured gear case that didn’t come from the factory. If I were you and serious about the boat check the gear case oil when you look at it and make sure it’s not burnt showing signs the gear case is overheating. Probably best to have a good mechanic look at it.

I agree it looks like a bad paint job but it could also be some kind of build up? Bring some Lime Away and a towel and see if it wipes off. I’ve seen some pretty crusty lower units clean up like brand new. Hard to tell in pics sometimes.

Good call baron at a closer look it appears that could be old bottom paint peeling off. If it is old bottom paint I would try a peel some off and be sure there is no putting on the gear case. There are a lot of bottom paints that are not supposed to be used on aluminum.
