Caught this 48 inch sturgeon close to the mouth of the Rainy River at Lake of the Woods today. Our boat was targeting sturgeon on a four hour trip, we caught two others and a half dozen keeper walleyes and sauger on the sturgeon baits. I released the sturgeon. Surprisingly, the sturgeon had a lamprey on it. How'd the lampreys get all the way to Lake of the Woods?

That's a special place! I did some work up there evaluating recovery of native mussels, but never got to fish the Rainy. Saw an awful lot of sturgeon while scuba diving for work. They are pretty scary when they glide into view unexpectedly

Lamprey was probably a silver lamprey, which is native up there
