Me and my wife took a trip to Punta to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary a little late. We ended up doing a group trip with a number of people in the region. A group of us decided to go out on a charter and see what could be had. Ended up catching mostly Mahi with a few Cuda's thrown in. A few in the group were chummin pretty bad :P Had 2 screamers that snapped us off - assumption was Marlin........darn. Anyway had a great time - first mate worked his butt off. We brought a few of the Mahi back to the resort and one of the restaurants prepared them for the group.

Sucks to be back in the cold!

Sounds like it was a fun trip. So how was the fight compared to our silver fighters.
It's better to ask forgiveness than for permission.

Mahi have nothing on a king ;) . We were using much more stout equipment though as well so its hard to compare apples to apples. One rod was 4' and was a stiff as rebar lol.

One of my early trips to the East Cape, fishing the Sea of Cortez north of Cabo San Lucas, we had great action on mahi 10 to 40 pounds and we were using our Lake Michigan gear - downrigger rods with 17 pound test and diver rod with 30#. The fights were incredible! It would be hard to compare directly with salmon as their fighting style was so different. The mahi jumped like steelheads, peeled line like kings and just never gave up!

If you are ever in a situation where you can target mahi (called dorado in Mexico) with light gear, you are in for some fun times!
