I will be out jigging them up once I get my boat back. Hopefully this weekend or next I would be willing to bet they are there.

Given the recent wind/waves, probably not many been out!

There have been a decent number of lakers showing up in the Michigan City harbor and lower reaches of Trail Creek, so I'm sure there are trout to be had at the Port as well

Have you guys seen any in the weir/ladder? I caught a few in a deep hole on Trail creek not too far from there this week. Can’t say that I ever remember catching them up in the creeks before, though I have heard stories and seen them all the way up at Berrien on the Joe. I pulled the first one up on the bank and noticed it was a right pec clipped fish. The second one I just flicked the hook out with my pliers without even checking. Any how, if there running up the creeks, they’ve got to be around the more traditional spots. Wonder if they’re trying to spawn up there or if they’re eating smolts or if there was a bunch of shad or shiners that moved into the creek? The fish I landed weren;t dropping eggs or milt.

Haven't seen any as far up as the barrier yet. I don't think they're really intending on going far upstream.

The phenomenon is pretty common when you have the right conditions - two years in a row it's set up perfect. When its late october/early november, and the lake is in the mid-50s still, the lakers are inshore and thinking about spawning but the water is on the warm side. Then if we get a cold front, the creeks cool off faster than the lake (Trail creek was 45 the other day) and the lakers head into the harbor and lower parts of the creeks to hang out and feed in their preferred temp range.

3 or 4 years ago at this time we found some just downstream of the Y at the confluence of Salt and Little Cal

Edit- although last year we did have 3 lake trout go up thru South Bend on the St. Joe. First time we have ever seen that in over 2 decades of monitoring fish passage there. I think years ago there used to be a lot more that ran up Michigan rivers, especially the Joe and Grand. Haven't heard of large movements there recently though, dunno what happened

I know back in the early 90's there used to be a large run of them in the joe between the lake and berrien. They were really a "nuisance" when fishing steelhead.

we have a metric shit ton of lakers on the southend now. I hope we are not way out of balance. It does not suprize me that we are starting to see them in areas we have not in the past. I'm hopping to get out soon to jig some greasy slobs off the bottom with my bass rod very soon.

I'm afraid that the definition of balance is different to fishermen of the Indiana portion of Lake Michigan and Lake Trout supporters. 60,000 kings per year 'vs' the vast amount of lake trout in Indiana waters. Balance??? What do Lakers eat???? any thing they want.
